FAQs

Who can join the Widows?

All Wellesley students are eligible to audition, and no prior experience is necessary!

What is the audition process like?

Each audition is around 5-10 minutes long, in which we will be testing your singing ability through several exercises. At the end of the audition, you will sing the verse that you prepared!

How do the audition time blocks work?

In the past, auditionees signed up on paper and waited hours for their audition. We want to improve the audition experience by eliminating long waits and crowding, so you can now select your preferred time block in Google Calendar, then show up at the start time of the block. If spaces have filled up, you can still show up or reach out and we'll try our best to accommodate!

What can I sing for my audition?

You may sing any ~30s chorus or verse of your choice! Some of our past members auditioned with modern pop songs, opera arias, songs in various languages, original songs. We hope you understand that we may need to stop you if you're singing overtime!

Can I audition for more than one a cappella group?

Absolutely, we encourage you to audition for any of the other Wellesley a cappella groups!

How many times can I audition?

You can only choose one time slot within the two-day audition period. If you've auditioned in a previous semester, you're welcome to audition again! And this won't hurt your chances, as the Widows have accepted students who auditioned more than once.

Can I get accepted by multiple a cappella groups?

Yes! However, you can only choose one group to join.

What is the time commitment?

We typically rehearse 5-6 hours per week, spread across three rehearsals, but this is subject to change in the fall semester. Our Music Director (MD) team will also hold optional office hours each week if members want to work on a specific song, practice in smaller groups, or just hang out! Following the audition process, rehearsal times will be scheduled in accordance with the group's availability. Many of our members find that the time commitment is very manageable, and are engaged in other orgs/e-boards in addition to the Widows!
